What On Earth Is Sodalite?

What On Earth Is Sodalite?

Sodalite is a dark blue tectosilicate mineral with white calcite interspersed. People have widely used sodalite as an ornamental gemstone because of its deep royal blue color. Other names for Sodalite are Blue Stone, Canadian Blue Stone, Canadian Lapis, and Glauconite.

The Physical Properties of Sodalite

Sodalite is named after its sodium content. In mineralogy, it’s classified as a feldspathoid.

Sodalite’s blue color is more like traditional royal blue rather than ultramarine. While it is mostly known for its blue color, Sodalite exists in grey, pink, green, and yellow and also mottled with white patches or veins. It is further differentiated from similar minerals by its white streaks. Sodalite has a Mohs scale hardness of 5.5-6.

The History of Sodalite

The Europeans first discovered Sodalite in 1811, but it wouldn’t be until 1891 that it would become recognized as an ornamental stone thanks to vast deposits of it found in Ontario, Canada.

It’s most well-known source was named Princess Sodalite Mine in 1901. It was given that name after the Princess of Wales who was gifted with Sodalite was instantly captivated by it. She would make arrangements to quarry enough of the stone to decorate her London residence with Sodalite. And in 1906, 130 tons of Sodalite were shipped to England to be used as a decorative stone in the Princess' royal home. Since then, Sodalite became commonly known as Princess Blue.

The Lore of Sodalite

Unlike other stones, Sodalite has not been associated with much myth of folklore. This is probably because it was established as a purely ornamental rock early on after Princess of Wales had it mined to decorate her room. However, it has been found to be labeled as the Stone of Truth. It’s also been referred to as the blue Logic Stone.
