Agate: the banded stone

Every slice is a record of a hollow in old volcanic rock filling up, one thin layer of silica at a time.

Agate starts as an empty space, usually a gas bubble trapped in cooling lava. Over a very long time, groundwater carrying dissolved silica seeps in and leaves thin coats of chalcedony on the walls, a quartz so fine-grained that its crystals can only be seen under a microscope. Small changes in the water and in impurities such as iron give each coat a slightly different colour, and the stack of coats becomes the bands you see when a nodule is cut open.

If the hollow never fills completely, the last layers grow as small quartz crystals in the centre. That is the sparkling cavity in an agate geode and the crystal "eye" in the middle of many slices. A hollow that seals before it fills can even keep a little of the original water inside, which is what an enhydro agate is.

Because the pattern depends on local water and rock, agate from one place rarely looks like agate from another. Botswana agate is known for fine grey and pink banding, Mexican crazy lace agate for tight swirls, and blue lace agate from southern Africa for soft blue and white lines. Moss and tree agate bend the rule. They are chalcedony with green mineral growths inside instead of bands, but the trade has called them agate for a very long time.

For a shop, that variety is the point. Agate is hard enough to tumble, slice, carve and drill, it is mined in large amounts, and it fits every price point, from a scoop of tumbled stones to a polished sphere or a slice for the window.

No two slices match. Every band is a record of the water that once moved through the stone.
About the stone

What is agate?

Agate is banded chalcedony, a fine-grained form of quartz that grows in layers inside hollows in volcanic rock. It is hard (6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale), polishes well and comes in more patterns than almost any other stone, which is why shops carry it in every form: tumbled stones, beads and bracelets, slices, geodes, spheres and carvings.

What we stock

Tumbled agate by the bag (Botswana, crazy lace, moss, tree, flower and banded agate), polished slices in thirteen sizes, bead strands and bracelets for jewellery makers, worry stones and pendulums, and numbered statement pieces such as spheres and carvings. Every numbered piece is photographed on its own, so you get the piece you see.

Natural and dyed agate

Agate takes dye well, so bright colours on the market are usually dyed. We mark dyed and coated agate "(Enhanced)" in the title. Untreated agate shows its natural greys, whites, honey tones, browns, red-orange and soft blue.

Reading our titles

The letter in a title (A, B or E) is the quality grade of that lot. Slice numbers (#0 to #12) are size bands. "Unique #" or "U#" marks a one-of-a-kind piece with its own photos and size.

In crystal traditions

What agate is traditionally used for

In crystal traditions agate is a steadying, grounding stone, linked with balance and composure. Each colour carries its own folklore. Blue lace agate is the stone of gentle speech, and moss agate has long been the gardener's stone.

Side by side

Agate, jasper or chalcedony?

All three are microcrystalline quartz. What separates them is how much light passes through and what the pattern looks like.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Bright pink, purple, teal and electric-blue agate is dyed. Natural agate comes in greys, whites, honey, browns, red-orange and soft blue. Our titles mark dyed agate "(Enhanced)".
  • Dye collects in the bands and in hairline cracks. Look along an edge or a crack for colour that is deeper than the rest of the stone.
  • Metallic gold or rainbow druzy agate is coated (electroplated). It is real agate under a thin metal film, and the title says Enhanced.
  • Glass sold as agate has no true banding when you hold it to the light, and its swirls are too regular. Real bands follow the shape of the original cavity.

Care and cleaning

  • Agate is hard and takes daily handling well. Wipe with a damp cloth and a little mild soap if needed.
  • Keep dyed agate out of water and strong sun; the colour can bleed or fade over time.
  • Slices can break if they land on an edge. Store them upright in a slotted rack or with paper between them.
  • Electroplated (druzy) coatings scratch. Dust them with a soft, dry brush.

How shops sell agate

  • Agate slices are an easy impulse buy in a sunny window or near the till. Keep sizes together so the price steps are clear.
  • Tumbled agate sells by the scoop. A mixed bowl of Botswana, crazy lace and moss agate shows the range better than one colour alone.
  • Put natural and dyed agate on separate shelves with a small sign. It answers the most common question before anyone asks it.
  • Pair a stone with a meaning card (we carry Natural Agate cards in 10-packs). It turns a $3 stone into a small gift.

How to display agate

Agate sells on pattern, so the job of the display is to get light and eyes onto the bands.

  1. Light from behindSlices glow when light passes through them. Stand them on a window ledge or in front of a lit shelf edge.
  2. Group by size numberLine slices up from #0 to #12 so customers see the price ladder at a glance. Mix colours within each size.
  3. Best face forwardTurn spheres, geodes and polished pieces so the strongest banding or crystal pocket faces the aisle, at eye level.
  4. Add a loupeA simple magnifier next to tumbled agate invites people to look at the bands, and they pick stones up while they do.
Questions

Agate FAQ

Is agate a type of quartz?

Yes. Agate is a banded form of chalcedony, which is quartz (silicon dioxide) made of crystals too small to see without a microscope. It is the same chemistry as clear quartz and amethyst, just a different texture.

Is colourful agate dyed?

Most bright pink, purple, teal and electric-blue agate is dyed. Natural agate is grey, white, honey, brown, red-orange or soft blue. Dyed agate in our shop has "(Enhanced)" in its title.

What is the difference between agate and jasper?

Light. Agate is translucent at thin edges and usually banded. Jasper is opaque and full of other minerals, so it shows spots, orbs and swirls instead of bands.

Why do some agate slices have crystals in the middle?

The cavity the agate grew in never filled completely, so the last layers formed small quartz crystals in the centre instead of more bands.

Is moss agate real agate?

Moss agate is real chalcedony with green mineral growths inside. It is not banded, so strictly it is not an agate, but it has been sold under that name for a very long time.

Can agate go in water?

Natural agate can be rinsed and washed. Keep dyed agate and electroplated druzy agate dry; water can lift dye and wear coatings.

Where does your agate come from?

Most slices and geodes come from Brazil and Uruguay. Botswana agate is from Botswana, crazy lace agate from Mexico, moss and tree agate from India, and blue lace agate from southern Africa.

Can I buy agate without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.
