The two walls Canadian makers hit

We read a lot of maker forums before writing this page. The same two walls come up in every thread, and neither of them is about crystals.

“If you don't have a resale licence, you are not a wholesale buyer.”

Wall one: the gatekeeping

Suppliers who want a business number, a status card, proof you already own a store, or a minimum you cannot cash-flow. One maker put it perfectly: “I didn't feel like lying about not being a pro.” You should not have to.

“I decide my work isn't worth that much and I cut the price down.”

Wall two: the pricing

Makers who price by feel, forget the stone entirely, and end up with a sold-out table and no money. The fix is not confidence. It is arithmetic you can check, which is further down this page.

“Ordering from the US is unfortunately no longer viable.”

And lately, the border

Brokerage, duty and multi-week transit on small restocks. We ship from Ontario in CAD, so a replacement strand is a parcel, not a customs event.

Which format you actually need

Most first orders go wrong here — someone buys a chip bag when they wanted a chip strand. Drilled material is for stringing. Undrilled material is for wrapping, cages and macramé.

Format Drilled? Typical size Best for
Bead strand Yes, 15in strand 4, 6, 8, 10mm round, faceted or matte Bracelets, necklaces, earrings — the bread and butter
Chip strand Yes, 32in strand 3–5mm or 5–8mm chips Chip bracelets, fringe, fast-selling market pieces
Loose chips (bags) No Five grades, 2mm to 3in Resin, fill, wire-wrapped clusters, gem trees
Tumbled stones No Five sizes Wire wrapping, macramé, coil cages, pouch add-ons
Quartz points Mostly undrilled 250g bags, single points Wrapped pendants, the piece people pick up first
Drilled points & drilled tumbles Yes 6-packs and small lots Pendants without wrapping — fastest build in the shop
Slices Some drilled 1.5in to 8in Statement pendants, earring pairs, mixed media
Coil cage & pre-set pendants n/a 20-packs and 5-packs Turning any tumble into a finished, sellable piece in seconds

What to order first

Everything here is in stock in Kitchener. Bead strands restock roughly every two months, so if a colour is out, it is worth checking back rather than switching suppliers.

Beads per strand, bracelets per strand, cost per bracelet

The numbers every maker works out once on the back of an envelope and then loses. A 15-inch strand, a standard 7-inch bracelet, and what the stone actually costs you at a listed $12 strand price (your wholesale price is lower again).

Bead size Beads per 15in strand Beads per 7in bracelet Bracelets per strand Stone cost per bracelet
4mm ≈ 95 ≈ 44 2 ≈ $5.50
6mm ≈ 64 ≈ 30 2 ≈ $5.60
8mm ≈ 48 ≈ 22 2 ≈ $5.50
10mm ≈ 38 ≈ 18 2 ≈ $5.70
Chips (32in strand) ≈ 4 ≈ $2.50–$3.50

So: the stone in a chip bracelet costs about three dollars, and in an 8mm bracelet about five. If that bracelet sells for $12 at a market, the problem was never the beads. Standard formulas are materials × 3 for retail, or (materials + labour) × 2 × 2 when you also want a wholesale tier at half of retail.

Which stones survive being worn

Hardness decides where a stone belongs. Below Mohs 5, a bracelet will destroy it and the customer will blame you.

Stone Mohs Rings & daily bracelets Pendants & earrings Watch out for
Quartz family (clear, rose, smoky, amethyst) 7 Yes Yes Amethyst can fade in strong sun
Agate, carnelian, jasper 6.5–7 Yes Yes Dyed colours can fade
Tiger's eye 7 Yes Yes Never dry-grind it — fibrous dust
Black tourmaline 7–7.5 Yes Yes Brittle along the length; drill gently
Hematite 5.5–6.5 Yes Yes Keep out of standing water
Labradorite, moonstone, amazonite 6–6.5 Careful Yes Cleavage — knocks chip the flash away
Lapis lazuli, turquoise 5–6 No Yes Porous; perfume and sweat dull them
Fluorite 4 No Yes Slightly water-soluble; cleaves easily
Malachite 3.5–4 No Yes Copper dust when cut — wet-work only
Selenite 2 No Display only Dissolves slowly in water. Never a bracelet

Dyed, heated, or natural — and how you will know

Roughly half the “turquoise” sold online is dyed howlite or magnesite. Most citrine on the market is heat-treated amethyst. Aura quartz is electroplated. None of that is fraud — it is only fraud when nobody tells you.

We label treated material in the product title itself: you will see (Enhanced) on dyed agate slices, on electroplated pieces, on heat-treated citrine. Trained gemologists check shipments in Kitchener before they go into stock.

You cannot disclose to your customer what your supplier did not disclose to you.

Quick field test for a strand you already own: dye tends to pool in fractures and drill holes, natural colour varies bead to bead, and a cotton pad with a little acetone will pick up surface dye. Our blog has a longer version in how to spot fake crystals, and the laminated Man-Made vs. Human-Enhanced Gemstones QuickStudy guide covers the whole subject on two sides.

Buying stone in Canada vs importing it

The honest version, including where the alternatives win.

Stonebridge US bead suppliers Offshore direct Marketplaces
Minimum order None Often none, but shipping minimums bite 50–500 pieces None
Access Apply, no licence needed Many require a state resale ID Negotiated Open
Lead time 2–5 business days Weeks, sometimes months 3–6 weeks + customs Days

Treatments disclosed Labelled “Enhanced” Varies Rarely Rarely
If it doesn't sell 365-day exchange on $300+ Return windows, cross-border No Returns only

Where they win: a US bead house will have seed beads, findings and specialist shapes we simply do not stock, and a marketplace will get you one strange stone tomorrow. Use both. We are the stone supply that does not punish a small restock.

Frequently asked questions

The questions makers actually ask, answered with numbers. Marked up as FAQ schema for search and AI assistants.

Access and ordering

Do I need a business licence or tax ID to buy wholesale crystals?

No. No resale licence, no tax ID, no proof that you already own a store. Tell us what you make and where you sell it — a market booth, an Etsy shop, an Instagram page or a storefront all qualify — and we approve most accounts in under one business day.

Is there a minimum order?

No minimum, and no per-style minimum. You can buy one strand. That is deliberate: makers should be able to test a stone before betting a month of cash flow on it.

Where can I buy wholesale gemstone beads in Canada?

Here, from an Ontario warehouse, in Canadian dollars, with no border costs. We stock 131 bead and chip strand lines in 4, 6, 8 and 10mm plus loose chips, tumbles and points, and ship to most provinces in 2–5 business days.

Do you ship to the United States?

Yes, to 40+ states, and free shipping over $300 CAD applies there too. Current rates show at checkout.

How often do bead strands restock?

Roughly every two months for the strand line; the rest of the catalogue restocks weekly. Stock levels shown on the site are live, so what you see is what is on the shelf in Kitchener.

Formats, sizes and specs

Are your crystal chips drilled or undrilled?

Both, and they are different products. Chip strands are pre-drilled chips on a 32-inch strand, ready to string. Chip bags are loose, undrilled chips sold by weight for wire wrapping, resin and clusters. If you want to string it, buy the strand.

How many beads are on a 15-inch strand?

Roughly 95 at 4mm, 64 at 6mm, 48 at 8mm and 38 at 10mm. A standard 7-inch bracelet takes about 44, 30, 22 or 18 beads at those sizes, so one strand makes about two bracelets at any size. A 32-inch chip strand makes about four.

What hole size do the beads have — will 0.8mm elastic fit?

Standard gemstone bead holes run about 0.8–1mm, so 0.8mm clear elastic is the usual match and we sell it in 10-packs of 7.5m rolls. Large-hole (2mm+) beads are the exception in this trade, not the rule — if a design needs them, check the listing first.

What is the difference between A, B and AAA grade?

It is a trade convention, not a certified scale: higher grades mean better colour saturation, fewer inclusions, more even banding and cleaner drilling. Our titles say A or B so you can match grade to price point — B-grade tumbles are perfect for cages and wraps where character reads as natural.

Can I use tumbled stones in jewellery if they are not drilled?

Yes, and it is the fastest build in the shop. Coil cage pendants (20 to a pack) take any tumble without drilling, and macramé and wire wrapping both hold undrilled stone. We also stock some drilled tumbles and drilled points if you want to skip the wrapping entirely.

Which crystals are safe to wear every day?

Mohs 7 and up — quartz family, agate, jasper, tiger's eye, black tourmaline — survive rings and daily bracelets. Between 5 and 6.5 (lapis, labradorite, moonstone, amazonite) is pendant and earring territory. Below 5 (fluorite, malachite, selenite) should never be a bracelet.

How do I wire wrap a crystal that has no hole?

Cage it or frame it rather than trying to drill it. A wrapped bail around a point, a coil cage around a tumble, or a woven basket for a slice all hold the stone mechanically. Drilling quartz at home usually ends in a cracked stone and silica dust you should not be breathing.

Authenticity and treatments

How can I tell if gemstone beads are real?

Check for repetition and temperature. Real stone varies bead to bead in pattern and shade; glass and plastic repeat, often with bubbles or a mould seam. Stone feels cool and heavy for its size. Dye usually gives itself away by pooling in fractures and drill holes.

Are dyed gemstones still real stone?

Usually yes — dyed agate is still agate, it has just been coloured. The problem is not treatment, it is undisclosed treatment. Dyed howlite and magnesite sold as “turquoise” is the most common example in this trade.

Do you label treated or dyed stones?

Yes. Treated material carries (Enhanced) in the product title — dyed agate slices, electroplated aura pieces, heat-treated citrine. You can pass that disclosure straight through to your customer, which is what protects your reputation.

Is most citrine really heat-treated amethyst?

Most commercial citrine is heat-treated amethyst, yes, and it is sold that way across the whole industry. It is still quartz and still perfectly good material — describe it as heat-treated citrine on your tags and nobody is misled.

Pricing and selling

How do I price handmade crystal jewellery?

Two formulas cover most makers. For retail only: (materials + labour + overhead) × 3. If you also want to sell wholesale to shops: (materials + labour) × 2 gives your wholesale price, × 2 again gives retail. Price the labour even when the piece is fast — especially when it is fast.

How much does the stone in one bracelet actually cost me?

At listed prices, about $5.50 of beads in an 8mm bracelet and about $3 in a chip bracelet — and your wholesale price is lower than listed. If your bracelets sell and you are still broke, the gap is labour and markup, not materials.

How much should I charge for a wire-wrapped pendant?

Work out stone cost plus wire cost plus your time at a real hourly rate, then apply × 3. Most makers discover their $45 pendant should be $70–$90. Market-day psychology is real, so keep a range of price points on the table rather than discounting the work.

How do I set a wholesale price if a shop wants to stock me?

Standard is half your retail price, so your retail has to support it. If your retail was built at × 3 from true costs, a 50% wholesale tier still leaves you a margin. If it was built by feel, it will not — which is the real reason most makers cannot say yes to their first stockist.

Do I have to buy in bulk to get wholesale pricing?

No. Wholesale pricing here is a status on your account, not a quantity break. One strand at wholesale is fine, and volume discounts stack automatically as you grow.
