Clear quartz: the stone once taken for ice

Rock crystal has been carved, worn and studied for thousands of years, and today grown quartz keeps time in your watch.

The ancient Greeks called clear quartz krystallos, meaning ice, and believed it was water frozen so hard it could never thaw. Our word crystal comes from it. Pure quartz is colourless and very transparent, and over the centuries it was carved into seals, bowls, lenses and ornaments.

Quartz grows as six-sided prisms that end in a point. Natural points are often cloudy near the base, where the crystal started on the rock, and clearer toward the tip. Many carry inclusions, a record of what was around while they grew, such as veils of tiny fluid bubbles, flecks of clay or chlorite, and ghost outlines of earlier tips called phantoms.

Quartz is piezoelectric. Squeeze it and it produces a small electric charge; apply a voltage and it vibrates at a very steady rate. That is why a sliver of grown quartz keeps time in most watches and clocks.

For a shop, clear quartz is the most useful crystal on the shelf. It is hard (7 on the Mohs scale), it comes in every size and shape, and it sits well beside every other stone, which is why it anchors most displays.

The word crystal comes from the Greek for ice. Clear quartz was the original crystal.
About the stone

What is clear quartz?

Clear quartz is colourless quartz (silicon dioxide), one of the most common minerals on Earth and one of the most popular crystals in any shop. It grows as six-sided points, often in clusters, and is hard enough (7 on the Mohs scale) to be cut into towers, hearts, spheres and pendants.

We stock it for every part of a shop: natural points and tumbled stones for the counter, towers and clusters for display, hearts and pendants for gifts, and numbered statement pieces for a window. Numbered pieces are photographed on their own, so you get the piece you see.

Reading our titles

The letter in a title (A, B or E) is the quality grade of that lot. "Unique #" or "U#" marks a one-of-a-kind piece with its own photos and size.

In crystal traditions

What clear quartz is traditionally used for

Crystal traditions call clear quartz the "master crystal" and use it to amplify other stones, in crystal grids and for meditation.

Clear quartz, glass or aura quartz?

Clear "crystals" are not all quartz. These three are the ones customers mix up most.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Natural quartz usually has small inclusions, veils or cracks. Large pieces that are perfectly flawless and bubble-free deserve a closer look.
  • Glass imitations have round bubbles, sometimes a mould seam, and warm up quickly in the hand.
  • Points with flat, too-regular faces and a polished base are cut from quartz; that is fine, but they are "polished points" rather than natural terminations. Check the title and photos.

Care and cleaning

  • Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap; dry with a soft cloth.
  • Points chip at the tip if they knock together. Store and ship them wrapped one by one.
  • Clear quartz in a sunny window can focus sunlight like a lens. Keep spheres out of direct sun near anything flammable.

How shops sell clear quartz

  • Small natural points in a bowl by the till are one of the easiest add-on sales in a crystal shop.
  • Towers and clusters sell as the "starter crystal" for customers building a grid or altar. Put them next to amethyst and rose quartz.
  • Pendants and hearts are gift items; show them near the cash with a price card.
  • Clear quartz sells all year. Back-to-school and New Year (intention-setting) bring small bumps.

How to display clear quartz

Clear quartz sells on sparkle and on size.

  1. Light from abovePoints and clusters flash under a spotlight or an LED strip under a glass shelf. Flat light makes them look dull.
  2. Natural and polished apartKeep natural points apart from polished towers. Customers see the difference, and the price difference makes sense.
  3. A point bowl at the tillSmall natural points sell as add-ons all year.
  4. The anchor pieceA large clear cluster in the middle of a shelf ties amethyst, rose quartz and smoky quartz together.
Questions

Clear Quartz FAQ

What is the difference between a natural point and a tower?

A natural point is the crystal as it grew, with its own faces and tip. A tower (generator) is cut and polished into a six-sided shape with a flat base so it stands up.

Is your clear quartz natural?

Clear quartz is natural quartz. If a piece in our shop is enhanced or man-made, its title and description say so.

Do you sell clear quartz without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.

Why is the bottom of a quartz point cloudy?

The base is where the crystal started growing on the rock, and early growth trapped more tiny bubbles and inclusions. Points usually get clearer toward the tip.

What is a double terminated point?

A crystal with a natural point at both ends. It grew free of the rock (often in clay) instead of being attached at one end.
