Stone notes

Selenite: the moonlit stone that hates water

Most selenite in shops is satin spar, a silky form of gypsum that carries light along its fibres.

Selenite is gypsum, hydrated calcium sulphate, the same mineral used to make plaster and drywall. It forms where salty water evaporates, in old seabeds and desert lake basins, and some deposits are enormous. The giant crystals in the Cave of the Crystals at Naica, Mexico, some longer than a bus, are selenite.

Strictly, the name selenite belongs to the clear, glassy form of gypsum that splits into thin, flat sheets. Most of what shops call selenite, the white sticks, towers, lamps and bowls, is satin spar, a fibrous form whose parallel fibres carry light along their length and give it that silky glow. Desert rose is a third form, rosettes of gypsum blades with sand caught between them.

Gypsum is soft. At 2 on the Mohs scale a fingernail scratches it, and it slowly dissolves in water. That is why selenite is dusted, never washed, and why polished pieces lose their shine in damp rooms.

The name comes from Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon, for its soft, moonlike sheen. Much of the satin spar sold worldwide comes from Morocco, where it is carved into the lamps, bowls and plates crystal shops know well.

The giant crystals in Mexico's Cave of the Crystals are selenite, some longer than a bus.
About the stone

What is selenite?

Selenite is a form of gypsum, a soft mineral (2 on the Mohs scale) made of hydrated calcium sulphate. Most of what is sold as selenite is satin spar, a fibrous gypsum that carries light along its length and gives sticks, lamps and towers their glow.

Read more about selenite

We stock it in the forms shops sell most: sticks and wands for the counter, charging bowls and plates for displays, lamps, slabs and logs for home decor, and numbered statement pieces. Selenite is soft and water-sensitive, so it needs a little more care than quartz.

Caring for selenite

Keep selenite dry and dust it with a soft cloth. Water dulls the surface and slowly dissolves it.

In crystal traditions

What selenite is traditionally used for

Named after Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon. Crystal traditions use selenite to cleanse other crystals and spaces, so charging bowls and plates are its classic forms.

One mineral, three looks

Selenite, satin spar or desert rose?

All three are gypsum. They look nothing alike.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Real selenite (satin spar) is soft. It shows silky parallel fibres and can be scratched with a fingernail. Glass or resin "selenite" will not scratch.
  • Bright orange, blue or pink "selenite" is usually dyed satin spar. Natural peach selenite exists and has a soft, uneven tint.
  • Selenite feels warmer and lighter than glass of the same size.

Care and cleaning

  • Keep it dry. Water dulls the surface and can dissolve fine edges. Dust with a soft dry brush or cloth.
  • {"Selenite is soft"=>"sticks and towers chip if dropped, so ship them wrapped one by one."}
  • Store away from humid bathrooms and window sills with condensation.

How shops sell selenite

  • Sticks and small wands are low-price, high-volume add-ons. Bundle them by the dozen at the till.
  • Charging bowls and plates sell as "a place to keep your crystals". Stage one with a few tumbled stones on it.
  • Lamps sell best switched on in a dim corner of the shop.
  • Tell customers to keep it dry; it saves returns.

How to display selenite

Selenite sells on glow. Give it light and keep it dry.

  1. Lamps switched onA lit selenite lamp in a dim corner of the shop sells itself. Switched off, it is just a white rock.
  2. Stage a charging platePut a plate or bowl out with a few tumbled stones on it, the way a customer would use it at home.
  3. Sticks in a jarA jar of sticks upright at the till is an easy add-on at a low price.
  4. A dry shelfKeep selenite away from windows with condensation, kettles and humid back rooms.
Questions

Selenite FAQ

Can selenite get wet?

No. Selenite is a form of gypsum and slowly dissolves in water. Clean it with a soft dry cloth.

Is this selenite or satin spar?

Most selenite sold in shops, including sticks, lamps and bowls, is satin spar, the fibrous form of gypsum. Both are the same mineral.

Why are some pieces dyed?

Coloured selenite is dyed satin spar. If a stone in our shop is dyed, enhanced or man-made, its title and description say so.

Do you sell selenite without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.

Is selenite the same as gypsum?

Yes. Selenite, satin spar and desert rose are all forms of gypsum (hydrated calcium sulphate), the same mineral used to make plaster.

Why is my selenite getting dull?

Moisture slowly dissolves the surface. Keep selenite in a dry room, away from bathrooms, kettles and windows with condensation, and dust it with a dry cloth.
