Smoky quartz: clear quartz, darkened by the earth

The same mineral as a clear point, coloured over a very long time by the faint natural radiation in the rock around it.

Smoky quartz starts out as ordinary quartz. Tiny amounts of aluminium sit in place of silicon in its crystal structure, and over a very long time natural radiation from the surrounding rock, often granite, changes those spots so they absorb light. The more change, the darker the crystal, from pale tea-brown to the near-black variety called morion.

That colour is stable in a room, but heat takes it away. Strongly heated smoky quartz turns pale or clear again, which is one reason some smoky crystals from the same pocket are lighter than others.

Smoky quartz grows in the same shapes as clear quartz. Single points, clusters on a shared base, and elestials, crystals that grew in layers and steps so the faces look like a stack of tiny terraces. It is found on several continents. Scotland's Cairngorm mountains gave one name to it, and the Alps, Brazil, Madagascar and Malawi are all known sources.

For a shop it is the earthy counterweight to amethyst and clear quartz. The colour suits wood and stone interiors, and the large clusters and points on wooden bases are some of the most striking pieces we sell.

Every smoky crystal is a clear one that spent a very long time in the dark.

Mythologie

Smoky, clear or black?

Smoky quartz sits between clear quartz and the black stones on most shelves. This is how to tell them apart.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Natural smoky quartz is see-through at the edges and its colour often fades toward the base or in zones. A crystal that is jet black and completely opaque all through may have been irradiated in a lab.
  • Lab-irradiated smoky quartz is still real quartz; only the colour is treated. When we know a piece has been treated, its title says "(Enhanced)".
  • Glass "smoky quartz" has round bubbles, no natural growth lines and often a moulded, too-perfect shape.
  • Heat removes smoky colour, so a smoky crystal will not survive a hot kiln or a fireplace mantel right above a fire.

Care and cleaning

  • Quartz is hard and handles daily life well. Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap; dry with a soft cloth.
  • Keep it away from strong heat, which can lighten the colour.
  • Elestials and clusters collect dust in their steps. Use a soft brush or a camera air blower.
  • Large points on wooden bases are top-heavy. Display them on a stable shelf, not at the edge.

How shops sell smoky quartz

  • Put smoky quartz between amethyst and clear quartz on the shelf. The three together tell the quartz story and sell each other.
  • Small natural points sold by weight band are a reliable counter item; keep a few sizes so customers can trade up.
  • Large smoky clusters and points on wooden bases are window pieces. One big piece makes the whole shelf look premium.
  • Smoky quartz suits customers who want something quiet and earthy rather than bright. It works well in neutral-toned gift displays.

How to display smoky quartz

Smoky quartz needs light behind or beside it, or it reads as black.

  1. Backlight the pointsStand points in a window or in front of a warm light. The brown glows through the edges and the colour range shows.
  2. Line up the shadesArrange points from palest to darkest. It answers "what is smoky quartz" without a word.
  3. Wood and stoneSmoky quartz looks best on wood, slate or linen. Bright white shelving makes it look flat.
  4. One hero pieceA single large cluster or a point on a wooden base at eye level draws people to the whole shelf.
Questions

Smoky Quartz FAQ

Is smoky quartz natural?

Smoky quartz forms naturally when natural radiation in the ground acts on traces of aluminium in quartz. Some very dark material on the market has been irradiated in a lab; if we know a piece is treated, its title says "(Enhanced)".

Why are some smoky quartz pieces lighter than others?

The colour depends on how much natural radiation and aluminium the crystal saw. Pieces from one pocket can range from pale tea to very dark.

What is an elestial?

An elestial is a quartz crystal that grew in layers and steps, so its faces carry many small terminations. Smoky elestials are among the most popular.

Is smoky quartz the same as black tourmaline?

No. Smoky quartz is quartz and is see-through at the edges. Black tourmaline is a different mineral, fully opaque, with long grooved crystals.

Can smoky quartz go in the sun?

Ordinary daylight and room light are fine. Strong heat can lighten the colour, so keep it away from radiators, fireplaces and hot car dashboards.

Can I buy smoky quartz without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.
