The Boutique
Crystal Corner Plan

One square foot, six to ten pieces, three price points. This is the whole plan for adding crystals to a shop that is not a crystal shop — the layout, the starter list, the signs, the staff script and the 90-day verdict.

The premise: crystals fail in retail when they are treated as a category and succeed when they are treated as a shelf. Keep it small, keep it priced, keep it where people queue.

The shelf, top to bottom

One square foot beside the till
Riser, eye level — one statement piece: a cluster, sphere or tower. Its job is to stop people walking, not to sell.
Shelf — boxed collections facing out, and bracelets on a small stand or in a bowl. This is the gift band and it pays for the shelf.
Counter, hand level — the bowl of tumbled stones with one visible price. The most-touched object in the display.
At the till — worry stones and selenite sticks under $16. Bought while waiting, without deliberation.
In the bag — a meaning card with every stone. It is what makes the purchase make sense at home.

Three rules that decide whether it works

  • Reachable beats protected. Crystals sell by being picked up. Nothing behind glass in the first season.
  • One price per container. A bowl where everything is $8 outsells a bowl where each stone is priced differently, because nobody has to do arithmetic.
  • Light it. One small spot on the statement piece changes the sell-through of the entire shelf.

The starter list

Pricing

The markup maths

Your cost Keystone 2× 2.5× (typical) Margin at 2.5×
$2.00 $4 $5 $6 60%
$4.00 $8 $10 $12 60%
$6.00 $12 $15 $18 60%
$10.00 $20 $25 $30 60%
$20.00 $40 $50 $60 60%
$40.00 $80 $100 $120 60%

Margin % is the share of the retail price you keep. Round to till-friendly numbers — $8, $12, $25 — rather than $7.97.

Staff script

The 60-second staff script

Nobody on your team needs to become an expert to sell a $10 stone. They need four sentences and permission to not know things.

“What's this one for?”

“That's amethyst — people usually keep it for calm or for sleep. There's a card that goes with it if you want the longer version.”

“Which one should I get?”

“Honestly? Most people pick the one they keep looking at. That's a perfectly good way to choose.”

“Do these actually work?”

“I can't promise you anything like that. People keep them because they like having something to hold — and they're beautiful.”

“Is it real?”

“Yes, it's natural stone. If it's been dyed or treated, the label says so — we're told, so you get told.”

The one rule for staff: never claim a health effect. Not about anxiety, sleep, pain or anything medical — not even casually, and not even if the customer says it first. “People keep it for…” is always safe. “It helps with…” is not.

The verdict

The 90-day sell-through check

Three months is enough to know. Fill this in rather than relying on a feeling about the shelf.

Line Bought Sold Sell-through Verdict

How to read it

  • Over 70% sold — reorder and increase the depth. This line is carrying the shelf.
  • 40–70% — reorder the same quantity. It is working at the level you bought it at.
  • Under 40% — move it before you judge it. Half the failures on a crystal shelf are placement, not product.
  • Still untouched after a move — exchange it. That is what the 365-day policy is for.
Do not mark it down first. Discounting teaches regulars to wait and permanently resets a $25 gift item to $12. Exchanging costs you a parcel.

What to reorder, and when

Season What moves Order by
New year Intention sets, clear quartz, “reset” merchandising Early January
Valentine's Rose quartz, hearts, bracelets Mid January
Mother's Day Gift band everything, boxed sets Mid April
Fall & Halloween Obsidian, black tourmaline, darker pieces Early September
Q4 gifting Boxed sets, bracelets, stocking-stuffer tumbles Early November
