Stone itself is not flammable — the National Candle Association's warning about embedded objects is aimed at flammable additions and explicitly excludes non-flammable items like metal and stone. But anything in the melt pool changes how a candle burns, and stone can crack, shift or get very hot. Keep stone out of the wick path, press chips into the top surface, and test-burn every design before you sell it.

Selenite (it is soft and water- and heat-sensitive), anything you have dyed or coated, malachite (copper), and any stone with visible cleavage planes or fractures that can pop under heat. Quartz-family chips, jasper and agate are the reliable candle-top stones.

Chips. Tiny and extra-small grades sit in the surface wax without unbalancing the candle, and they cost a fraction of a tumble per unit. A 100g bag tops a lot of candles.

Handling is not the risk; ingestion and dust are. The International Gem Society rates malachite and azurite high for copper content, and cinnabar (mercury), realgar (arsenic) and galena (lead) are genuinely dangerous if ground or swallowed. Do not put any of them in a drinking elixir, and do not dry-grind them.

Use the indirect method: put the stone in a sealed vessel and stand that vessel in the water, so nothing leaches. It works for every stone including the toxic ones, and it is the version we would suggest you teach in the shop.

Not really. Selenite is gypsum and dissolves at roughly 2 grams per litre — a rinse will etch the polish and a soak will slowly consume it. Dust your charging plates; never wash them.

Treated material is labelled “Enhanced” in the product title — dyed agate, electroplated aura quartz, heat-treated citrine. Trained gemologists inspect shipments in Kitchener. Dyed stones are legitimate stock, mislabelled stones are not.
