Full Moon Rises

The Full Moon Rises

There is something special about a full moon, and I am not talking about all the weird stuff that happens! I mean when you see her big bright orb illuminating the world, casting everything in a surreal, silvered light, it's as if the universe is sharing its own quiet magic, inviting us to pause and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

A full moon occurs when the moon is positioned directly opposite the sun, with Earth in between. This alignment results in the entire illuminated side of the moon being visible from Earth, creating a round and luminous appearance. Did you know that a full moon's gravitational pull is strong enough to slightly alter the Earth's shape? During a full moon, the planet becomes ever-so-slightly more spherical, like a gentle cosmic massage for our home sweet Earth! 🌕🌎

On average, a full lunar phase occurs approximately once every 29.5 days, which is the length of a complete lunar cycle. In a calendar year, there are typically about 12 to 13 full moons. This variation is due to the fact that months on our calendar don't perfectly align with the lunar cycle. Some years may have 12 full moons, while others have 13.

This irregularity is why we sometimes have an extra full moon, known as a "Blue Moon," which is a second full moon in a calendar month. We got to witness a blue moon this year in August and we will see another in May 2026.

We name each full moon based on ancient traditions and observations of nature. These names, like "Hunter's Moon" or "Harvest Moon," serve as markers for seasonal changes and activities, reflecting the symbiotic relationship between humans and the environment, and preserving cultural wisdom passed down through generations.

The Hunter’s Full Moon

Interpretation: The Hunter's Moon is a term steeped in tradition, referring to a full moon that graces the month of October. It is a reliable presence in October skies, save for the occasional occurrence once every four years when it makes its appearance in November instead. This evocative name traces its roots back to the First Nations of North America.

In the ancient rhythms of nature, October marked the season when deer were at their prime, having feasted and fattened throughout the summer. It was under the luminous embrace of the autumn moon that hunters skillfully tracked and secured their prey, stockpiling vital sustenance for the impending winter months.

Other names for the Hunter’s Moon are sanguine or "blood" moon, kindly moon, or chrysanthemum moon.

Beyond its practical implications, the Hunter's Moon carries deeper symbolic meaning. It represents a time of culmination, of reaping the rewards of one's labor and preparing for the colder months ahead.

In various spiritual practices, it is seen as a time for reflection, gratitude, and honoring the cycles of nature. The Hunter's Moon encourages us to connect with the primal rhythms of the Earth, reminding us of our place within the natural world.

Here are some of the spiritual meanings attributed to the Hunter's Moon:

  7. Inner Strength and Empowerment: The Hunter's Moon inspires a sense of inner fortitude and empowerment. It calls us to tap into our inner resources, trust our instincts, and pursue our goals with determination and focus.

Lunar Eclipse

Lunar Eclipse

A lunar eclipse transpires when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align precisely, orchestrating the Moon's passage through Earth's shadow. Within a total lunar eclipse, the entire lunar surface finds itself immersed in the innermost section of Earth's shadow, scientifically termed the umbra.

Here, the Moon undergoes a remarkable metamorphosis, manifesting as a distinct reddish hue. This phenomenon is attributed to the scattering of sunlight through Earth's atmosphere, a process known as Rayleigh scattering, which selectively transmits longer wavelengths and bathes the Moon in a captivating crimson tint, rendering it popularly known as the "Blood Moon". “There’s blood on the moon… Get my Tiger’s Eye!” - Practical Magic.

Lunar Eclipse Symbolism

The Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse In Taurus

Taurus is all about stability, security and material possessions. This eclipse may encourage us to let go of attachments that no longer serve us and seek a deeper, more authentic sense of security. It reminds us that true stability comes from within and encourages us to trust in our own worth and abilities.

It also signifies a powerful opportunity to pave the path for a significant transition towards actions that benefit the collective good. It holds the potential to guide you towards discovering what you seek in life.

I believe that the collective has already been called to this new opportunity for the last month or so. Every new person I speak to has mentioned doing shadow work, and wanting to focus on service and love. What better way to do so than offering this intention to the full moon, have it amplified by a lunar eclipse, and embrace the little and big new beginnings that unfold towards the end of this year, closing 2023 with a big beautiful bang!

This juncture offers a unique opportunity for seeking equilibrium and personal evolution on our spiritual paths, especially when the boundary between the ethereal and the tangible worlds is believed to be most permeable.
