Quartz: one mineral, a whole shop

Clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, smoky quartz and citrine are all the same mineral. Small differences make each one.

Quartz is silicon dioxide, the most common mineral in the Earth's continental crust after feldspar. Pure quartz is colourless, which is why clear crystals were once thought to be ice that would never melt; the old name rock crystal comes from that idea.

Colour comes from tiny amounts of other elements and from natural radiation. Iron plus radiation turns quartz purple (amethyst). Aluminium plus radiation turns it brown to black (smoky quartz). Rose quartz owes its pink to microscopic mineral fibres inside it. Natural citrine is pale yellow from iron, and most of the deep orange citrine sold today is amethyst that has been heated.

Inclusions make another set of varieties. Golden needles of rutile give rutilated quartz, black tourmaline needles give tourmalinated quartz, and earlier growth stages trapped inside a crystal show up as ghostly phantoms. Lemurian quartz, from Brazil, is known for the fine horizontal ridges across its faces.

{"Quartz is also what agate, jasper and chalcedony are made of, in a form with crystals too small to see. And because a quartz crystal vibrates at a steady rate when electricity is applied, grown quartz keeps time in most watches. For a shop, quartz is the backbone of the range"=>"hard, varied, available in every size and every budget."}

Amethyst, citrine, rose quartz and smoky quartz are the same mineral. Small differences in chemistry make each colour.
About the stone

What is quartz?

Quartz is silicon dioxide, one of the most common minerals on Earth and the backbone of every crystal shop. Clear quartz, amethyst, rose quartz, smoky quartz and citrine are all the same mineral, coloured by trace elements, natural radiation, inclusions or heat. It is hard (7 on the Mohs scale) and comes in every size, from tumbled stones to statement clusters.

What we stock

Clear quartz points, clusters, towers, hearts and spheres; rose quartz spheres, hearts and chunks; smoky quartz points, elestials and clusters; Lemurian, rutilated, tourmalinated and phantom quartz; citrine and aura quartz; plus tumbled quartz, chips, beads and jewellery. Use the shortcuts above to shop by variety.

Natural and treated

We mark treated quartz "(Enhanced)" in the title: heated citrine, coated aura quartz and dyed stone. Untreated quartz is sold as it came from the ground, polished or rough.

Reading our titles

The letter in a title (A, B or E) is the quality grade of that lot. "Unique #" or "U#" marks a one-of-a-kind piece with its own photos and size.

Mineral
Quartz, silicon dioxide
Hardness
7 on the Mohs scale: it scratches glass and steel
Colour
Colourless when pure. Traces of other elements, natural radiation and inclusions make purple, pink, brown, yellow and more
Habit
Six-sided crystals that end in a point; also massive (no faces) and microcrystalline (agate, jasper, chalcedony)
Where
Found on every continent; Brazil, Madagascar, Arkansas (USA) and the Alps are classic sources of fine crystals

In crystal traditions

What quartz is traditionally used for

In crystal traditions clear quartz is the master stone, said to amplify the stones around it. Each colour carries its own folklore, from amethyst's calm to rose quartz's warmth and citrine's sunny optimism.

Side by side

What makes each quartz colour

Same mineral, same hardness (7). The difference is a trace element, natural radiation, inclusions or heat.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Quartz is 7 on the Mohs scale and scratches glass. Glass "crystal" is softer and often shows round bubbles and swirl lines.
  • Most bright orange citrine is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine is pale yellow to smoky gold. Our citrine titles say "(Enhanced)" when the stone is heated.
  • Aura quartz (aqua, tangerine, opal and lavender aura) is real quartz with a vapour-bonded metal film. "Aura" in one of our titles always means a coated, treated piece.
  • Lab-grown (synthetic) quartz exists and is used in industry. It is very clean and even; we sell natural quartz unless a title says otherwise.

Care and cleaning

  • Quartz is hard and easy to look after. Wash with lukewarm water and mild soap; dry with a soft cloth.
  • Strong, long sunlight can fade amethyst, rose quartz and smoky quartz over time. Keep window displays out of full afternoon sun.
  • Aura quartz coatings scratch. Store coated pieces on their own and do not scrub them.
  • Clusters and geodes have fragile points. Lift them by the base, never by the crystals.

How shops sell quartz

  • Build the shelf around the quartz family. Clear, amethyst, rose and smoky quartz side by side make the most familiar crystal display there is.
  • Use the colour story. A small sign that says "all of these are quartz" starts conversations and leads to multi-stone sales.
  • Quartz covers every budget, from tumbled stones and small points at the till to statement clusters and spheres in the window.
  • Be clear about treated pieces. Labelling heated citrine and aura quartz honestly builds trust with collectors.

How to display quartz

Quartz is the backbone of most crystal shops. Organise it so the family is obvious.

  1. Colour gradientRun clear, smoky, amethyst, rose and citrine along one wall. It shows the range and helps customers compare.
  2. Light through the pointsPoints and clusters sparkle with a light from above or behind. A small LED strip under a glass shelf is enough.
  3. Sizes in a ladderArrange points and towers from small to large so customers can trade up without asking.
  4. Treated on its own shelfGive aura quartz and heated citrine their own space and label. Collectors appreciate it, and gift buyers love the colours.
Questions

Quartz FAQ

Are amethyst, citrine and rose quartz all quartz?

Yes. They are all quartz (silicon dioxide) with the same hardness of 7. Trace elements, natural radiation, inclusions or heat give each its colour.

Is citrine just heated amethyst?

Much of the deep orange citrine sold today is heat-treated amethyst. Natural citrine exists and is usually pale yellow to smoky gold. Treated citrine in our shop is marked "(Enhanced)".

What is aura quartz?

Clear quartz with a very thin layer of metal (such as titanium or gold) bonded to the surface in a lab. It is real quartz with a coating, so it is a treated stone.

What is Lemurian quartz?

Clear quartz points, mostly from Brazil, known for fine horizontal ridges across some faces. The name is a trade name.

How can I tell quartz from glass?

Quartz scratches glass and feels cool for longer in the hand. Glass is softer, warms quickly and often shows round bubbles.

Can I buy quartz without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.
