Where did the smoke cleansing practice originate?

Smoke cleansing has been a firmly established practice in Native American tribes and cultures. Many indigenous groups in Canada practice it (historically called smudging), although they may hold different beliefs related to it.

It is a daily practice of cleansing and purification that uses certain herbs (usually sage) that are bundled together to make a smudge stick. The stick is then ignited to produce smoke that is believed to get rid of negative energies and purify living spaces. It is also done to cleanse tools, furniture, and decor.
