Stone notes

Fluorite: the stone that named fluorescence

Banded in purple, green and gold, and the reason we have a word for things that glow under ultraviolet light.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride. It grows as cubes and as eight-sided octahedrons, and it often changed colour as it grew, so a single crystal can hold bands of purple, green, blue, yellow and clear. Cut into a sphere or slice across those bands, it shows stripes that look painted.

In 1852 the physicist George Stokes studied how some fluorite gives off visible light when lit by invisible ultraviolet. He named the effect fluorescence, after the mineral. Not every piece glows, but many fluoresce blue or violet under a UV torch.

Fluorite is also soft, 4 on the Mohs scale, and it splits cleanly along four directions. That cleavage is how the neat octahedrons sold in shops are made, and it is why a fluorite sphere needs more care than a quartz one. A sharp knock can open a flat, rainbow-coloured crack inside the stone.

The mineral is mined for industry as well as for collectors; it is a source of fluorine and has long been used as a flux in steelmaking, which is where its name comes from, the Latin for to flow. In Ontario, fluorite was mined commercially around Madoc in the last century.

Lit by a UV torch, many fluorite pieces glow blue. The word fluorescence was named after this stone.

In crystal traditions

What fluorite is traditionally used for

In crystal traditions fluorite is the stone of focus and order, kept on desks and in study spaces. Its banded colours are said to bring calm structure to a busy mind.

Fluorite or amethyst?

Purple fluorite and amethyst are easy to confuse in a bowl. Hardness and shape tell them apart.

Real, treated or fake?

  • Glass "fluorite" is common in bead strands. Glass has round bubbles and its colour sits in smooth swirls rather than straight bands.
  • Real fluorite often shows flat cracks inside that flash rainbow colours. Those are cleavage planes, a sign of the real mineral.
  • Some fluorite fades after long periods in strong sunlight. It is natural colour, not dye, but it is not light-proof.
  • Very bright, even blue or pink fluorite can be dyed or coated. Our titles say "(Enhanced)" when a piece is treated.

Care and cleaning

  • Fluorite is soft and splits easily. Keep it away from harder stones and do not let spheres roll.
  • Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth. Do not soak it, and avoid hot water and ultrasonic cleaners, which can crack it.
  • Keep it out of long, strong sun to protect the colour.
  • Use a padded stand for spheres; a hard ring stand can chip the base.

How shops sell fluorite

  • Fluorite spheres are a strong desk and study gift. Put them near notebooks, journals and pens.
  • A UV torch at the counter is a cheap, memorable demo. Customers remember the stone that glowed.
  • Sell fluorite as a set with clear quartz and amethyst for a study or focus kit.
  • Fluorite meaning cards come in 10-packs; add one to every sphere or bracelet.

How to display fluorite

Fluorite has a lot of colour but needs light through it to show.

  1. Light from behindSpheres and slices glow when light passes through the bands. A lit shelf edge or a window ledge works best.
  2. Rotate the best band forwardEvery sphere has a best side. Turn it so the strongest purple and green stripe faces the aisle.
  3. Padded standsUse soft or acrylic sphere stands so the stone cannot roll or chip, and keep spheres away from the shelf edge.
  4. A glow cornerA small UV torch on a cord next to the fluorite invites people to try it.
Questions

Fluorite FAQ

Why is fluorite so fragile?

Fluorite is 4 on the Mohs hardness scale and splits cleanly along four directions. A knock can open a flat crack, so handle it more gently than quartz.

Does fluorite glow?

Many pieces glow blue or violet under ultraviolet light. The word fluorescence was named after fluorite. Not every piece glows, and the strength varies.

Can fluorite go in water?

A quick wipe or rinse is fine. Do not soak it, use hot water or put it in an ultrasonic cleaner; temperature changes can crack it.

Why do fluorite spheres have cracks inside?

Most are natural cleavage planes from how the crystal grew. They often flash rainbow colours and are a normal feature of the stone.

Is fluorite the same as amethyst?

No. Fluorite is calcium fluoride and much softer (4). Amethyst is purple quartz (7). Fluorite also comes in green, yellow and blue, often banded together.

Can I buy fluorite without a minimum order?

Yes. There is no minimum order. Approved wholesale customers see their wholesale price on every product once signed in.
