Lithium Quartz: The Antidepressant Crystal That Calms & Relaxes

Need a crystal to protect and preserve your mental health? Lithium quartz gets the job done. This crystal is known as a spiritual talisman that is said to manage anxiety and depression. It also directs love and compassion to people who struggle with accepting themselves.

Learn more about this quartz variety and how it benefits your life.

The Physical Properties of Lithium Quartz

Lithium quartz is a clear quartz crystal with trace amounts of lepidolite (lithium mica), giving the crystal a soft pink to purple blush. It has a Mohs hardness rating of 7 and is a durable gem material.

The History of Lithium Quartz

Geologic occurrence

Lepidolite is a mica mineral rich in lithium and is known for its pink, red, or purple colour. It is a minor ore of lithium. This metal is mainly used in producing lithium batteries for gadgets and devices. In an increasingly tech-driven economy, lithium mining is one of the most lucrative businesses in the world.

How does lithium quartz form? It forms in hydrothermal veins that contain hot water and magma. Through the igneous process and high pressures, the hot water dissolves the minerals in the igneous rock and slows down the growth of new minerals.

As quartz slowly grows, it acquires a thin film of silvery-white lithium. The colour pink is produced when lithium and the silica in quartz interact. As the crystal continues to grow, quartz covers up the entire layer of lithium until the metal is enclosed in the crystal.

Lithium quartz is mainly extracted in Brazil through artisanal or small-scale mining.

Lithium as a treatment for depression and bipolar disorder

In 1949, John Cade (an Australian psychiatrist) popularized the use of the metal lithium to treat mental health illnesses. He conducted a series of experiments to test the calming effect of lithium to patients with manic depression. Later, he proposed that manic depression is caused by lithium deficiency.

Cade eventually abandoned further experiments with the metal after finding out that an abundance of lithium in the bloodstream poses danger to health. Years later, other scientists figured out the right dosage of lithium for treating symptoms of manic depression. This led to lithium becoming the first medication for mental stability.

Today, it is now the principal medication for bipolar disorder.

The Lore of Lithium Quartz

Many ancient cultures regard quartz as a powerful crystal that offered various benefits. The Greeks and Romans used it as a protective talisman. Indigenous tribes of Australia and the Americas used quartz to conjure visions. The Egyptians believed the crystal could prolong the life of its wearer.
