Amazonite is also referred to as the Amazon stone. The name was obtained from the Amazon River and the lush jungle region surrounding it where the original “green stones” were discovered. Its color ranges from light green, blue-green, or bright green. Most amazonite are translucent. On the Mohs’ scale of harness, it ranges from 6 – 6.5.
The green to blue-green color is caused by a small quantity of lead impurity within the microcline. It ranges in hue from bright verdigris green to paler shades of turquoise, sometimes with white, grey or yellow portions, and can be luminous to opaque. It has a glass-like luster, and when refined, resembles a spider-webbed marble and pearly iridescence throughout the stone.
The History of Amazonite
Amazonite was worn as jewelry in pre-Columbian South and Central America and was believed to have adorned the shields of the semi-mythical Amazonians. They also used Amazonite medicinally to heal wounds and illnesses of all kinds.
