Crystal Skulls: How They Work, Their Storied Origins

Crystal Skulls: How They Work, Their Storied Origins

Crystal skulls are among the most sought-after crystal shapes in New Age spiritualism. These cleverly crafted crystals are thought to deliver life-changing benefits like their cousins spheres and pyramids.

Some say their appearance is peculiar, others say they're creepy. But did you know when you have a crystal skull, you're getting more than its healing and psychic abilities? You're also getting a storied origin, ripe with history.

Healing and Psychic Powers

Crystal skulls are commonly made of quartz, an indispensable mineral in manufacturing electronic devices and storing data due to its piezoelectric properties (or their ability to generate electric charge when subjected to mechanical stress).

Some people believe that the same piezoelectric properties enable crystal skulls to store a wealth of ancient knowledge, as well as messages from aliens or lost civilizations. This is why they are referred to as ˜cosmic libraries.'

Many people vouch for the ability of gemstones to manifest intentions and raise vibrations. And shaping these stones into skulls is a way to amplify their existing powers. Skulls made from various precious stones are said to speed up the healing process for distresses affecting the mind and heart.

Crystal skulls are also known for enhancing psychic powers. The vibrational energy that skulls release are believed to be similar to the electromagnetic waves of the brain which are responsible for thought processing.

As a result, people who meditate with crystal skulls derive insight and knowledge. Some people even report experiencing premonitions and psychic visions in the presence of the skulls.

Joshua Sapiro, the co-author of the book Mysteries of the Crystal Skulls Revealed, highlights claims of healings and psychic benefits from people who have used the skulls.

…We believe the Crystal Skulls are a form of computer which are able to record energy and vibration that occur around them… The skull will pictorially replay all events or images of the people who have come into contact with them (i.e. they contain the history of our world).

According to crystal healer Adrienne Goff, a connection with a crystal skull becomes possible when your own cranium (the part that encloses the brain) comes into harmonic resonance with it. This harmony stimulates the transfer of energy and information into your consciousness.

Different Versions of Lore and History

In the 19th century, a huge fascination with the Mesoamerican culture was widespread throughout Europe and North America. Europeans traded tales and even ancient artifacts from ancient Mesoamerican peoples including crystal skulls.

There are three different theories that attempt to explain the origins of crystal skulls. First, that they come from ancient Mesoamerica. Second, that they came from the lost islands of Atlantis or Lemuria. And third, that crystal skulls were possibly made by aliens and not by human hands.

But the most popular and often told version of all is the first theory. This version claims that 13 crystal skulls were discovered in the late 19th century which were believed to be crafted by the peoples of Mesoamerica.

Twelve of these were of equal size and contained information about the planets, and one large skull that acted as a center of consciousness for all the planets.

Arranging the 12 in a circle and placing the 13th at the center was the way to access supernatural knowledge contained in these crystals, promoting human enlightenment.

Crystal skull lore and history.png

When the Great Flood happened, legend has it that the 13 crystal skulls were saved on an ark that rescued people from the raging waters.

After the flood had subsided, the crystals were dispersed across various parts of the globe. Believers of this legend say that the 13 skulls will once again be reunited in due time and will give humans the knowledge they need to make the world a better place to live in.

However, the scientific world doesn't concur with this legend. Scientists have proven that the life-size quartz crystal skulls actually date from the 19th century and do not originate from the Mesoamerican culture.

Civilizations in the 1860s didn't have the advanced carving tools then, so scientists conclude they could not have created such perfectly shaped skulls.

Despite being faced with scientific evidence, believers of the healing powers of crystal skulls chose to bury their heads in the sand and continued the trade and use of these objects for alternative healing.

How Are Crystal Skulls Made?

Crystal skulls are manually carved out of various types of rocks and minerals, the most common of them being clear quartz.

Crystal healers believe that as they grew deep within the earth, natural stones already have innate healing powers as well as the wisdom of the ages. But when they are extracted, their powers get diminished or become dormant.

Fashioning the stones into skulls is said to reawaken their energies. This is due to the principles of Sacred Geometry which are applied in the process of sculpting and polishing the stones. Sacred Geometry rejuvenates the natural powers that the stone possesses.

Today, skulls are carved from a single piece of crystal, with sizes ranging from a few centimetres to the actual size of a human skull.

Other than the human form, crystal skulls are also carved into the heads of animals and extra terrestrial beings, each of them storing a unique vibration.

Skulls and Death

For the average person, what comes to mind when they think of skulls are horror movies, death, danger, and occult practices.

In some cultures, however, skulls represent none of these macabre associations – they are a symbol of light, life, and new beginnings.

The ancient Aztec, Nahua, and Toltec civilizations in South America started the Dia delos Muertos (Day of the Dead, which falls on November 1 and 2) to celebrate the reality of death.

They acknowledge that death is a natural and inevitable part of life. So rather than mourning over their loss, they celebrate the lives of the people who have passed.

Dia delos Muertos is still celebrated to this day and families would place candles, flowers, and foods on the grave of their deceased loved ones. South Americans would decorate their altars with flowers, candles, and colourful ceramic skulls as part of their tradition.

In the world of crystal healing, skulls and dark-coloured crystals go great together”not in inciting fear or worry, but to deflect negative energies.

Skulls made from obsidian and black tourmaline are considered to be highly effective in cleansing the aura, reducing anxiety, getting rid of negative thoughts, and protecting against evil intentions.

Uses and Benefits of Crystal Skulls

Crystal skull uses.png

Different types of crystal skulls are used for the following purposes:

  • Meditation - As a meditation tool, a crystal skull works to activate your healing or psychic gifts, help you access the Akashic records, or elevate your higher consciousness.
Adrienne Goff suggests some simple ways to meditate with a crystal skull. First, cleanse the crystal (e.g., placing it in bright sunlight, running water over it, or fanning sage smoke around it), then come into a quiet and relaxed space while holding it close to your heart or third eye.
Take a couple of conscious breaths as you focus on your intention for connecting with the skull's energy field.
Try to be welcoming of any perceptions that you may have during your meditation. Goff says that the more you hold and connect with your crystal skull, the more activated it becomes.
  • Amplifying a crystal grid - A large crystal skull can be used to boost the spirituality and vibration of a crystal grid. Use it as your centre point.
Add smaller skulls and/or gemstones of your choice and arrange them in a spiral or concentric circles pattern. enhance your intention. Then channel your intention to it.
  • For collection and decoration - In themselves, crystal skulls are beautiful works of art; a product of fine craftsmanship. Many people are fond of collecting various designs, colours, and sizes of skulls, while others display them in their living rooms or altars.

If you're just starting out with your collection and you're not so keen with the metaphysical aspect of crystal skulls, begin with one item then add more later.

The benefits you can get from your crystal skull depends on rock or mineral material it is made of. Here are some common crystal skulls and what they can bring to your life:

Tips in Choosing Your Crystal Skull

Now that you know where crystal skulls came from, how they work, and the popular varieties on the market, let's get into the ways of selecting your own crystal skull.

1. Follow your intuition. Pay attention to how you feel when you see a certain crystal skull or when you hold it. Are you attracted to it? Do you feel excited, joyful, or a tingling sensation?

2. Come back later and peruse the selection for the second time. If you still feel the buzz for that one particular crystal skull and you can't get the crystal off your mind, chances are it is meant for you.

At first glance, you may sense that a crystal skull is communicating something to you. You may even dream of it before you could even encounter it somewhere. In which case, consider going on a deliberate search to get a hold of that crystal.
